Las Vegas' top attraction? Gambling, of course
Gambling is the number one attraction in Las Vegas.
Nevada gaming styles, games and machines have continuously evolved
to keep pace with more sophisticated and more affluent players. Blackjack
dealers switched from single decks to "shoes" that hold multiple
decks. Mechanical slot machines were replaced by the age of electronic
gaming and video poker.
Mechanical penny and nickel slot machines that accept one coin at a time
evolved into computerized versions that accepted multiple tokens at a time.
And for those who want to risk more than a nickel, a quarter or a dollar
at a time, today's machines will accept $100 or even $500 tokens! Of course,
the size of the jackpots has also grown - from a few hundred dollars to
progressive jackpots that pay as much as $10 million or more. No wonder
it's such a popular attraction!
Resorts become an attraction in Las Vegas
For those interested in free Las Vegas attractions, simply take a walk. A walk down the Strip is an adventure like no other. Exploding volcanoes, pirate ships with live pirates doing battle, a giant Egyptian Sphinx, a replica of the New York City skyline, a 50-story replica of the Eiffel Tower and massive fountains are just a few of the visual highlights. And that's just on the outside.
Additional treasures await those who venture inside these massive, eclectic structures. You'll find aquariums, the tomb and museum of King Tut, roller coasters, circus high wire acts, royal white tigers, a dolphin habitat, IMAX theaters and complete shopping centers. These are all great Las Vegas family attractions!
Today's mega resorts are nothing less than gaudy and grand not to mention giant. The Mirage opened in 1989 with 3,049 rooms.
