Step into the Past with a Visit to Historic Williamsburg

Many people are interested in historic Williamsburg when they vacation in this beautiful and historic city. Those with an interest in American history should visit Colonial Williamsburg, which gives visitors great insight into what life was like in Virginia during the 18th century.

The historic Williamsburg area encompasses more than 300 acres. On those acres are 88 original buildings from the 18th century. In addition to those original structures, guests will also be able to see scores of other houses and outbuildings reconstructed on their original sites.

Many of the buildings are open for the public to visit. Some of the places that you can see are the Governor's Palace, the Capital, Raleigh's Tavern, and the Magazine, where ammunition was once stored. In addition, you can see a number of buildings and gardens with great historical significance.

Historic Colonial Williamsburg looks just like a town out of the colonial days, and the village is filled with period costumed historic interpreters. You can see everyone from random townsfolk to famous founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

Visitors will also be able to see some great craftsmanship and demonstrations by blacksmiths, saddlers, and cooks. All of these period interpreters use the same techniques used back in colonial times.

Located in a single building in historic Williamsburg are several great museums, including the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. These are both great places to see some more of the nation's past.

In addition to all of the wonderful historical sites you can see at Colonial Williamsburg, you will be able to do some shopping to pick up a souvenir and grab a bite to eat at the King's Arm Tavern or Shields Tavern.
